OIC Offers Fall Tutor Training – Help An Adult Learn to Read

Become a reading tutorOIC announces Fall Tutor training beginning the three-part training on August 19, 2017.  Training is for those who want to be trained to work with non- and low-level adult readers, or help those who want to improve their English language skills.

According to the United National Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, “Literacy is the ability to understand, interpret, create, communicate, and compute using printed and written material.”  Blair Lanning, OIC Literacy Coordinator states, “An estimated 1 in 5 adults in Oklahoma County have below basic literacy skills.  This means adults with minimal reading ability have difficulty finding employment, following directions on medications, or fill out employment applications.”  The ability to read is critical.  Children who fall behind when learning to read often become adults with literacy problems.

As a single parent, Tanya Burrell began meeting with her tutor four years ago, raising her reading level over 7 grade levels. Her first goals were to improve her basic literacy skills.  Now she is in her fourth semester of college and plans to become a physical therapist. Tanya’s opportunities to improve her lifestyle and provide for her son have kept her motivation strong.  “I have fallen in love with reading and love to share this with my son,” says Tanya.

OIC Literacy tutors and students typically meet once or twice a week at a public location and work for an hour or more.  Schedules are coordinated to work best for the student and tutor.

Training will be held at OIC
