Spring Awakening OIC Welcomes New Teachers

Spring is all about rebirth, regrowth, and new beginnings. Spring is a season of change, and just like the tulips and daffodils are waking from the long winter, the OIC’s family welcomes new teachers and courses. We are grateful for the innovation and hope that our new teachers will create at the OIC. Will you please join us in welcoming; Deveryle James and Ashley Janelle Rhone to our OIC of Oklahoma County family!

Deveryle James has been with the OIC for a few months now, teaching Adult Basic Education classes. Ashley Janelle Rhone is our newest  edition, teaching our new Conversational English and Citizenship courses. We asked them both a few questions so that we could get to know them better.

1. What are three words that your best friend would use to describe you?

Ashley Janelle Rhone: Loyal, Funny, Adventurous
Deveryle James: Determined, Funny, Out-spoken 

2. Where is your family from?

Ashley Janelle Rhone: Oklahoma City
Deveryle James: Texas, Oklahoma, Ireland

3. Did your parents go to school? And if so where?

Ashley Janelle Rhone: My mother graduated from Bishop McGuiness H.S. and my father graduated from Del City H.S.
Deveryle James: Yes, Longview, TX.

4. Did you have a favorite subject of study in High School? Did you have one you disliked?

Ashley Janelle Rhone: I loved French class, but I disliked Algebra
Deveryle James: I loved English and Literature, but I disliked Math.

5. Do you have a favorite book that became a movie?

Ashley Janelle Rhone: Sorry, nothing comes to mind
Deveryle James: Their Eyes Were Watching God, written by Zora Neale Hurston, starring Halle Barry.

6. Why did you decide to become a teacher?

Ashley Janelle Rhone: I decided to become a teacher after having studied abroad in France, where I learned first-hand how difficult learning a second language is in an immersive environment. My struggle led me to proactively help non-native English speakers in their quest to learn English and about American culture.
Deveryle James: I decided to become a teacher because I love learning and helping others to learn. I love the academic environment in all of its various formats!

7. What do you love about teaching? What do you not love about teaching?

Ashley Janelle Rhone:  I find the fact that I’m able to actively and visually improve the life of a student deeply rewarding. But I don’t love grading papers.

Deveryle James: One of the things that I love about teaching is when students finally grasp a concept that I have been trying to teach them. I also love when students are able to combine newly learned academic concepts with a creative concept; for instance, combining new (and old) vocabulary with poetry or creative writing. I do not love the fact that even after all of these years, the teaching profession continues to PAY SO VERY LITTLE!

8. If OIC had a talent show what would be your talent?

Ashley Janelle Rhone: My talent would be playing the harp.
Deveryle James: My talent would be reading some of my poetry.
