Oklahoma City, OK – Opportunities Industrialization Center of Oklahoma County, Inc. (OIC) has been inspiring and motivating adult learners for 51 years. Development staff and the Board of Directors have planned an annual Gala to support OIC’s adult education programs. The date of the Gala is set for March 29, 2018, at 6:30 pm, at The Credit Union House, 631 E. Hill Street. Tickets are $50 a plate. The ticket price includes dinner and a talk from the author, motivational speaker and community advocate, Lee Roland. All proceeds will benefit educational programming at OIC.
During the month of March, the 501c3 non-profit organization will be fundraising to raise dollars to help continue to provide adult literacy programs. As the speaker for the event, Lee Roland has labored as an educator and administrator for 30 years, currently serving on staff at The Parish in Oklahoma City and Adjunct Professor at Southern Nazarene University. In his new book, The Fantastic Voyage: A Story of School Turnaround and Achievement by Overcoming Poverty and Addressing Race, Lee chronicles the success in an at-risk northwest Oklahoma City community that had only known failure prior to his arrival.

Since 1966, OIC has served nearly 41,000 adults in education and training programs in Oklahoma County. Here are a few facts about the OIC of Oklahoma County:
- OIC’s operational costs are less than 7% of its budget.
- Last year graduates of the GED course increased by 300%.
- The average annual wage pre-enrollment is $7,543, doubling to $18,318 after training.
- New programs for 2018 include Diploma Prep 24/7, an online GED course, and Conversational English / Introduction to Citizenship for non-native residents.
The need for OIC programs continues with 400,000 adult Oklahomans who do not have a high school diploma. 31% of adults in our state function at basic literacy levels, and 12% function below basic literacy. These statistics result in workers who are unprepared to meet the demands of a changing workforce. OIC programs provide Oklahomans with literacy and education tools that prepare learners to confidently transition to college, career tech, military and the workforce.
